Makeup History – Contouring

In the 16th century, contouring was used by Elizabethan stage actors, who applied chalk and soot to their faces to help audience members read their facial expressions from afar.

In the late 1800s, when electricity was invented and lights were widely used, soot was no longer a viable or plentiful resource, leaving actors and artists to seek another alternative.

Makeup has taken many forms around the world over the years across cultures.

Argued as the oldest form of self-ritual in human culture, it’s been our preferred form of self-expression for nearly as long as we’ve existed.

The glamorous stories and depictions of ancient Egyptian and Asian cultures are laced with Kohl-lined eyes, cheeks and lips tinted rosy with steeped flowers, and luscious perfumes. Across these cultures, Makeup and personal care were most often a luxury of the rich and royal, not available to most unless for very special occasions, if at all.

Contrast that to the Indigenous cultures of North and South America, Africa, and Australia where makeup and face-paint were ceremonial and spiritual tools used to prepare for celebrations and battle alike.

While demeaning and painful beauty practices are rightly falling to the wayside of practical living in today’s modern world, many beautiful traditional practices like Henna Tattoo art, ancient ayurvedic skincare, and Contouring are here to stay.

In the 21st Century, you don’t have to scavenge the soot from your fireplace to get that chiseled look.
