Hormone Disruptors – What You Should Know

Ever wonder how the chemicals in traditional personal care might affect your hormones?

What is Endocrine Disruption?

Endocrine Disruptors are chemicals that interfere with your body’s natural endocrine system — the system in your body which manufactures and circulates the hormones that regulate reproduction, stress, sleep, metabolism & more.

These Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) can cause adverse health-effects including immune, neurological, developmental or reproductive in both the user and his/her offspring. Some of these chemicals have even been linked to Cancers.

Hormones and Disease/Cancer

It’s no secret that certain Cancers have been linked to specific hormones – Estrogen excess is a known trigger of both Breast and Ovarian Cancers, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

Because we know this hormone, which is also essential to reproduction and other processes in our bodies, can be potentially harmful in excess, people undergoing Hormone Replacement Therapy and the millions of women who use Oral Contraceptives are warned of the inherent dangers of taking additional Estrogen…

But what about the phytoestrogens and other EDCs in your makeup and skincare?

EDC’s in Your Cosmetics – What To Look For

You might not think of Hormone Disruptors in the makeup or personal care products you use everyday, but the truth is — most of the products you use are likely to contain at least one hormone disrupting chemical.

Many of them will contain a few, and perhaps even some products on the shelves contain ingredients that you can’t even sound out when you try to do your due diligence as you shop.

Here are the top 4 ways you can eliminate EDCs from your personal care.

Lose Parabens

The most widely used preservative in cosmetics – these little buggers easily penetrate the skin’s surface and mimic estrogen in the body. There is no regulation of Parabens in cosmetics in Canada.

Ditch Plastics

Even if plastic containers don’t contain any BPA, they can still leach hormone-mimicking chemicals into your products. Studies have shown that we can’t always control the plastic we intake — plastic particles have been found in rain water.

Do yourself a favour and opt for glass or metal packaging whenever possible. Check out our new waste-free packaging.

See You…Phtha-LATER, Phthalates!

Phthalates are a group of silicone-like chemicals that are used to make lotions, shampoo & conditioners, even nail polish go on silky-smooth. They’ve been linked to early cell death and birth defects, so pregnant and breastfeeding women need to be especially careful to avoid them.

Step Aside, Pesticides

We know to avoid chemically-sprayed food at the grocery store, but what about pesticides in your cosmetics? It’s probably a surprise to many natural beauty enthusiasts that there could be pesticides in even your highly-touted goods.

Pesticides are a known human carcinogen, so when they pop up in products you absorb, inhale, and eat (think lip balm, lipstick, toothpaste) everyday — it’s something to consider.

How to Stay Safe: Opt for Organic ingredients whenever possible, especially in products that contain highly-sprayed crops like Rice, Wheat, or Oat starches & proteins.
