Gluten-Free Beauty: What’s The Deal?

Gluten-Intolerance, Gluten-Sensitivity, Celiac Disease?

Today, Gluten – a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and spelt grains is a hot topic in restaurants – but what about your beauty products?

Let’s Talk About Gluten

To be clear, Gluten is not evil. It’s a completely natural part of real, whole foods that come from the Earth.

The problem is, many people have issues digesting this protein and sometimes, the symptoms or illnesses that arise while the body tries to rid itself of the proteins it deems harmful can be serious, or even fatal.

There are several types of Gluten Sensitivity…

The Types of Gluten Sensitivity

Gluten-Sensitive people who are sensitive to Gluten may experience some familiar symptoms of poor/improper digestion. This can include minor gas, bloating or discomfort, and potential nausea, diarrhea or vomiting in more severe cases. Sometimes, Gluten sensitivity can be caused by another inflammatory gut condition or imbalance. Be sure your gut bacteria are in check and there are no other food-intolerances to blame for your symptoms before you cut out Gluten.

Gluten-Intolerance like those with Gluten sensitivity, anyone with Gluten-intolerance can expect some Gastro-intestinal symptoms if they ingest Gluten by accident or on purpose. Those with Gluten-intolerance may experience lethargy, headache, or general aches and pains with long-term exposure. While there is no long-term damage to the intestines for those with Gluten-sensitivity or Gluten-Intolerance, the body does react to Gluten proteins as a foreign body, as with other allergies.

Celiac Disease is an auto-immune condition that occurs in reaction to the ingestion of Gluten. People with Celiac disease have to be extremely careful of gluten-exposure and cross-contamination of gluten into Gluten-free items as exposure to the protein can have real, long-term side-effects which include the standard G.I. upset and range in severity all the way to Neurological disorders, Heart conditions, Infertility, even Stroke.

Gluten & Your Skin

So, do you need to worry about Gluten in my Makeup & Skincare?

If you don’t have an issue with Gluten, there’s no need to worry about Wheat proteins in your products, but for those with severe intolerance or Celiac Disease — Gluten-free beauty deserves your diligence.

Any product that comes into contact with your mouth, eyes, nose, or any other mucus membrane on your body may pose a risk and should be avoided at all costs. Wash your hands after applying gluten-containing products on yourself or others, and never apply any gluten-containing product on an open wound or skin lesion.

Studies suggest that gluten-containing hair products, etc. aren’t absorbed into the skin in any amount that should cause a reaction.
