Heavy Metals & Your Skin

Rock & Roll all night long, just be sure to wash your face before bed…

You know lead and arsenic are bad for your health, but what about your skin?

Heavy metals like Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Micas, even Mercury are popping up on ingredients lists faster and faster these days as big brands look for “more natural” solutions to pigment eyeshadow, bronzer, eyeliner, blush, lipstick, etc. but the question remains — are they safe?

Many of these ingredients are loosely derived from natural minerals found under the surface of the Earth — The problem is, continued exposure and absorption of heavy metals can be even more dangerous to our health than we thought.

Overexposure to Lead and other heavy metals may cause Cancer, developmental and reproductive problems, organ toxicity, and environmental concerns as sourcing these materials is often damaging to our planet. Check out this full post from Safe Cosmetics.

Have a close look at the ingredients in your makeup.

Heavy Metal in our cosmetics and skincare are especially dangerous for two reasons:

  • Bioaccumulation – we have no way to process and remove Heavy Metals from our body. Meaning that every particle you consume and absorb is yours — for life. We absorb between 20-70% of everything we put on our skin: you do the math.
  • Respiratory Concerns – what you don’t absorb you breathe in. Heavy Metals get a direct shot to your bloodstream through the beautiful capillaries that help your lungs fill your blood with oxygen. That means that powdered and mineral makeup and skincare can be especially hazardous to us.

These problems become even scarier as we find ways to process ingredients to make makeup even easier to use.

Enter NANO-particles.

Nanoparticles are even tinier versions of these potentially-harmful ingredients that go on smoother, last longer on your skin, and get absorbed even faster and more completely into your body…hooray?

Nanoparticles come in a tiny package, but could be even more harmful to your health than their big sisters.

Since they’re so new, we don’t have research to guide us, but there is some early evidence to show these tiny versions of the ingredients we already know to be suspect might be even more toxic than their full-sized counterparts. Small, but mighty.

Oh well, at least they make you beautiful, right? Wrong.

Many heavy metals are skin irritants and can make inflammatory conditions like Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, and Rosacea even worse.

Studies have even shown that long-term exposure and absorption of heavy metals may damage the gut lining, disrupt hormonal balance, and proper metabolic function — the fun!

With all the science stacked up against heavy metals like Lead, Mercury, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides and Micas that show they’re potentially harmful to our health and the health of the planet, it’s a wonder why they still exist in our cosmetics and skincare products at all. Be sure to read the full ingredient list on all your products and get in the know about what you’re putting on your skin every day.
